Is your child a creative genius? Are they obsessed with apps like Instagram, Snapchat and Tiktok? Are they looking for another creative digital challenge? Then this app design course is for them! Your child will learn about important app design concepts such as wireframes and user journeys by creating card and paper smartphone models. These fully-formed paper prototypes serve as a blueprint when making digital prototypes using the Marvel App - software utilised by professionals to build and test apps quickly. Finally, our budding app creators will flex their coding knowledge using the MIT App Inventor to bring their app to life!

Learning outcomes

In this course, students will learn all about the process of app design. From explaining what affordances and call-to-actions are, to understanding what wireframe and click streams do, the whole process will help them gain confidence with their programming and creative skills. They’ll start by creating a storyboard and user journey, moving onto understanding what prototypes and Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) are and they’ll learn to understand functions. Coders will gain confidence with coordinates, drawing and using images, finishing the course with their very own customised app!

Information for parents

MIT App Inventor uses Blockly/block-based coding to turn ideas into real working apps on an Android device, therefore existing Scratch knowledge/experience will be an advantage in this course but is not required. Please note that we provide Android devices but not laptops so please do bring your own or rent one from us at checkout.

Camp structure

This is a sample schedule for a typical day at camp. In between each lesson there will be a 15-minute snack break, or a 1-hour lunch and play break.
10.00 - 11.00
Lesson 1
First off we'll get to know our teacher and classmates through some great mini games. Once we're all friends, we'll be introduced to our activity for the day. Let's jump in to coding!
11.15 - 12.30
Lesson 2
Now that we've had a healthy snack, we're ready to get right back into our activity. We'll carry on flexing our creative muscles by designing, coding and building our project.
12.30 - 13.30
Lunchtime
After half an hour for lunch it's time for some offline, outdoor time. Students take part in activities ranging from inflatable obstacle course races to football tournaments, scavenger hunts to water games (fingers crossed for some sunny weather!).
13.30 - 14.45
Lesson 3
Let's refocus after lunch and playtime by diving into building our robots!
15.00 - 16.00
Lesson 4
It's time to finish off our project for the day and show it off to the rest of the class. Time has flown by - let's tidy up our work stations, pack up our things and get ready to go home!
