Innovators: Ages 10-14

Introduction to JavaScript

Join us for Rocktober's digital concert. Campers will be exposed to a wide range of skills with a musical twist to create digital music, robotic instruments, and access Spotify through code using their API. Students will explore the most prevalent text-based coding language and learn how to design games, apps, and more!

JavaScript is the most commonly used programming language in the world. It’s the hidden language that makes the web more interesting, your favourite sites engaging, and online games playable and smooth. Behind the scenes it is Javascript which makes the digital world so fun!

Aimed at those with little to no coding knowledge, this course covers the fundamental elements of programming using JavaScript, as well as tips on best practice. It's also ideal for young intermediate coders with some experience of block-based coding who want to move onto text-based languages.

Students will learn coding concepts such as variables, loops, and parameters. Having gained a foundational grasp of a concept we then challenge students to apply this new found knowledge to their own unique project. These projects are massively varied, offering the opportunity for each child to tailor their learning to their own passions and interests. In this way campers are able to cement their knowledge of Javascript concepts and will be able to walk away with their very own original work at the same time!

Our goal is for each participant to feel confident coding, as they undertake original projects and gain familiarity with the Javascript language. We also show students the tools and resources available so they can continue learning and developing independently with Javascript after the course.

This is a sample schedule for a typical day at camp. In between each lesson there will be a 15-minute snack break, or a 1-hour lunch and play break.
10.00 - 11.00
Lesson 1
First off we'll get to know our teacher and classmates through some great mini games. Once we're all friends, we'll be introduced to our activity for the day. Let's jump in to coding!
11.15 - 12.30
Lesson 2
Now that we've had a healthy snack, we're ready to get right back into our activity. We'll carry on flexing our creative muscles by designing, coding and building our project.
12.30 - 13.30
Lunchtime
After half an hour for lunch it's time for some offline, outdoor time. Students take part in activities ranging from inflatable obstacle course races to football tournaments, scavenger hunts to water games (fingers crossed for some sunny weather!).
13.30 - 14.45
Lesson 3
Let's refocus after lunch and playtime by diving into building our robots!
15.00 - 16.00
Lesson 4
It's time to finish off our project for the day and show it off to the rest of the class. Time has flown by - let's tidy up our work stations, pack up our things and get ready to go home!

Policies

Illness policy

Campers should not be brought to camp if they are displaying signs of illness. In the case of a camper who has become ill during camp hours, parents will be notified immediately to pick their child up. If a child misses a day or multiple days of camp because of an illness, credit towards another camp can be arranged for when they're feeling better.

Refund policy

You can cancel your camp booking up to 14 days prior to the start date. If you want to cancel your camp booking less than 14 days before, you can receive 50% refund or full credit towards future courses when cancelling between 13-7 days before, or full credit when cancelling less than 7 days before. If we are unable to run our camps, you will receive credit or a full refund. If you cancel for any reason you may be liable to pay the difference if our prices increase.
