Ideal for students who have completed our popular Minecraft Modding: Part 1 course, in this course Minecrafters will use a block-based programming language to code and create their own in-game items, weapons and structures using more advanced mods. With some Minecraft modding experience under their belts already, students in this course will be able to jump straight into customisation and work on projects to develop their imagination and improve their programming skills.

Learning outcomes

In this course, students will use a block-based programming language to code and create their own in-game items, weapons, and structures while improving their programming skills. This course aims to engage young learners through creative coding projects in the popular online game, and give them a thorough grounding in computational principles; we'll be reviewing how students can use loops, functions, variables, and conditionals, amongst other things. Students will improve their programming skills by looking at new more complex features, learning valuable engineering skills that they can apply outside of the course!

Information for parents

We ask that - for at least the first session - an adult is available to help your child with their set-up in order to avoid any delays. Setting this software up is easy and we will provide you with comprehensive set-up instructions before your lessons begin, so do check your email! Minimum computer specs can be found on the Minecraft website. As part of the course you will need to download Minecraft Java Edition. We will provide LearnToMod accounts, but you are welcome to purchase your own if you want to continue using your account after the course ends. But don't worry! We will provide more information on everything you need to set up once you have booked.

10.00 - 10.15

Set-up
Students will set up their coding environments, share any work from the previous day or projects they have done independently.

10.15 - 11.00

Coding
45 minutes of focused coding, led by our fantastic teachers. Students will face new challenges, solidify their knowledge of coding concepts and flex their creativity!

11.00 - 11.15

Wrap-up
Students will complete quizzes and challenges to test their knowledge and share their work.

Policies

Lateness policy

Customer feedback has told us that students joining late can be disruptive for other learners. Therefore, we have imposed a cut-off time for joining lessons. If a student is more than 15 minutes late to a lesson, they will not be admitted. Late students will be able to catch up using recordings of the lesson and additional learning resources.

Recordings of lessons

All online lessons will be recorded, and recordings will be uploaded to the class padlet as a resource for students who have missed a lesson, or who want to watch again. Recordings will only be available to students in the class, the class teacher and the BlueShift team. Recordings will be deleted seven days after the course ends.

Can I book individual days?

We do not allow individual day bookings for our online courses. The length and composition of the course is designed carefully so that students can work on different concepts and projects at certain points within the course. Therefore we believe that individual day bookings would both be disruptive to the rest of the class, and benefit the child attending partial days less. We want all children to leave our online courses feeling like they have accomplished a goal - joining for a day or two might leave your child unsatisfied!
If you are not available for all of the sessions, you can still book a course. When you sign up to a class, you will receive a link to a Padlet which will have the solution code available for each lesson. Therefore if your child has to miss a lesson, they can log-in outside of the classroom and catch up!
You can also book our 1:1 online tuition which offers more flexibility.

What laptop or computer is suitable for this class?

Is adult presence required?

For children that are 6-7 years old, we ask that a parent or adult is able to stay for the full session. Younger students might require more assistance and we will need to assess they ability during the session. The parent might only need to be there for the first 15 minutes, but they should stay nearby.
Do I need to install anything prior to the class?

Yes, to do this class, you will need to have the latest version of Minecraft downloaded onto your computer. We will send you full setup instructions beforehand.

Minecraft Account - This is the username and password that you use to log on to Minecraft. It can be the same login that your child usually uses.
You can purchase a Minecraft Account here or rent one of our to use during the class
LearnToMod Account - This is the username and password that students will use to access the LearnToMod website. We will provide one of our accounts to use during the course, but you are welcome to purchase your own account if you want to keep your work and continue modding. You can purchase your account here.
