Mary, Senior Teacher

Currently studying Data Science, Turing College Lithuania; BSc Psychology, University of Greenwich

I became interested in teaching while I was still a teen. Teachers play a very important role in their students’ life. Teachers can inspire the children and help them work on their future. I chose to study psychology because that allowed me to understand better how people learn. Then I found Blueshift which allowed me to join my two interests of education and tech. It’s a great feeling to see my students learn and solve various coding problems and see the spark in their eyes when we create something together and they like it.

Back in 2017 I made some friends who were all in tech. They were all very inspired by their work and made me curious if it’s something I could do, so I took a web development course. After the course, I realised that although web development is fun! I was more interested in software engineering and data science and that motivated me to learn Python and apply for a Data Science course. I think learning to code is important because that is the direction which the job market is taking. There are more and more digital businesses and the world employment statistics are showing that there are already more available jobs in tech than there are people able to take them. Coding is also lots of fun, so even if someone doesn’t want to work in tech there are other uses for it.
