  • How does it work?

    Our virtual classroom teaches your child programming skills in your home.

    1:6 teacher:student ratio with an experienced blue{shift} teacher leading the class.

    With five daily lessons our virtual classroom is a great form of social learning - kids explore code together!

  • Each student will need:

    • A laptop or computer with a high-speed internet connection
    • A headset/earphones
    • A webcam and a microphone
    • An adult to help set-up

    Before each session, we will provide instructions on setting up our video conference software.

Course information

Channel your childs creativity in this exciting course that explores the viral hit 'Flappy Bird' through creative coding!

Students write and programme their own games, customising and adapting as they see fit, all whilst learning the Scratch coding language. Indeed, in this course students will use Scratch, a language invented by MIT, to learn vital coding skills necesary for any programmer. 

In this course, students create their own version of ‘Flappy Bird’, the viral hit game that made millions on the Apple App Store in 2013. They will learn how gravity and movement works in games, how they can program their game characters to detect object collisions, and even build points scoring systems!

Course Structure

  • Day One: The teacher and the class introduce each other. Once acquainted, the class will start learning about foundational elements of both Scratch and game engines!
  • Day Two: In their second lesson, students learn how to generate obstacles and make a score counter that will form the fundamentals of the game.
  • Day Three: Now being well into the course, students will learn how to debug and solve any issues, as well as adding an ending to the game.
  • Day Four: Students join our teacher in creating modifications and customisations. This enables each student to revise their knowledge to create their own customised version of Flappy Bird.
  • Day Five: Adding any finishing touches to their individual games, each student then shares their project and the class discusses their games with expert feedback & advice!


This course aims to cover tougher coding concepts and logic than our Intro to Scratch course, and encourages children to think through and solve challenges. Students will leave the week with key programming knowledge, improved problem-solving skills, and a strong foundation that they can use to progress onto text-based coding languages like JavaScript!

Using video conferencing software, our virtual classroom provides students with an innovative approach to coding that balances learning computational skills with nurturing students’ curiosity and sense of discovery.

With a maximum teacher:student ratio of 1:6, each of our online courses is the perfect opportunity to engage kids and grow their coding confidence! Once set-up within our virtual learning environment, every member of the class can share their screen and other materials with the teacher, creating a collaborative atmosphere and ensuring every student can receive immediate feedback on their work.

Your child will learn:

  • About the fundamental building blocks of game engines; they will be able to create gravity, movement, and more!
  • How to design systems able to detect collisions and track scores and other data.
  • A number of advanced computational concepts and thinking such as functions, data structures, and parameters.
  • Key skills needed for progression to text-based programming.
  • Important logical reasoning and problem solving skills.
  • How to independently code and create their own advanced projects and games.

Typical Class Structure

10:00-10:15Set Up
Students will set up their coding environments, share any work from the previous day or projects they have done independently

10:15-11:00Coding
45 minutes of focused coding, led by our fantastic teachers. Students will face new challenges, solidify their knowledge of coding concepts and flex their creativity!

Please note, any students arriving 10 minutes into this section of the lesson will not be admitted into the class. Please read our lateness policy for more details.

11:00-11:15Wrap Up
Students will complete quizzes & challenges to test their knowledge and share their work. 


Lateness Policy

Customer feedback has focused on how students joining late can be majorly disruptive. 

Therefore we have imposed a cut-off time for joining lessons. If you are 15 minutes late to a lesson you will not be admitted into the class. We will ensure late students can catch up by using the recordings of the lesson and additional class resources!

Recordings of Lessons

Lessons will be recorded and uploaded onto the class padlet as a resource for students who have missed a lesson or arrived late.

Recordings of classes will only be available to class students, the class teacher, and the blue{shift} team. Recordings will be deleted 7 days after a course ends.
