Mathieu, Senior Teacher

BSc Creative Computing, Goldsmiths, UoL

There’s something very rewarding in the exercise of teaching, it’s a challenge because every student is different and what I especially like is the transformation of knowledge once it is passed to someone. It is the moment just after a certain concept or technique clicks and the student decides to reuse it in a different context - it shows that the student has not only acquired the knowledge but now owns it and can reuse it to serve the situation.

I started coding when I was 18. Most of my computing literacy came from spending hours designing logos on Photoshop, and making photo montage as well as video montage. I studied applied arts before computing and was interested in bridging my taste for visual arts with the potential of computing power. Coding became a good challenge, it’s an exercise of logic. I don’t think that someone needs to be mathematically oriented to enjoy coding. For me, it is more logical than mathematical and should not be reserved only for the students who have well developed mathematical ability. On the contrary, it should be open to everyone who is interested in learning.
