Important Information

  • How does it work?

    Our virtual classroom teaches your child programming skills in your home.

    1:6 teacher:student ratio with an experienced blue{shift} teacher leading the class.

    With five daily lessons our virtual classroom is a great form of social learning - kids explore code together!

  • Each student will need:

    • A laptop or computer with a high-speed internet connection (an ethernet cable if possible)
    • A headset/earphones
    • A webcam and a microphone
    • An adult to help set-up

    Before each session, we will provide instructions on setting up our video conference software.

Course information

This is a continuation of our best-selling Minecraft Modding course - students will discover unique mods that explore wondrous magic, fantastical creatures, and all the cauldrons and potions they could ever want! 

The course features exciting new challenges for all Minecrafters that we cannot wait to share with you. Indeed, students will  improve their programming skills by modifying the game through new mods, as well as learn valuable engineering and problem-solving skills. They will develop their extensive minecraft knowledge even further to code and create their own in-game items, weapons, and structures with more advanced features and a higher level of complexity than before. 

Like our previous Minecraft Modding courses this class aims to engage kids through creative coding projects in the popular online game, and give them a thorough grounding in computational principles. By applying coding skills to Minecraft campers will learn how to use loops, functions, variables, and conditionals, amongst other things. Finally, the students will work on projects that utilise both off-screen activities and programmes outside of Minecraft to develop their imagination and practical skills, which can then be applied to their in-game servers!

Minimum computer specs can be found on the Minecraft website. As part of the course you will need to download Minecraft Java Edition. We will be providing LearnToMod accounts, but you are welcome to purchase your own if you want to continue using your account after the course ends. But don't worry! We will provide more information on everything you need to set up once you have booked.

Please note: each lesson lasts two hours. Within each lesson we will take a short screen break, giving students time for a quick breather before coding again. Part of the time in each lesson is also dedicated to set-up and trouble shooting; a supervising adult may be needed to help with any issues at the start of each lesson. 

Using video conferencing software, our virtual classroom provides students with an innovative approach to coding that balances learning computational skills with nurturing students’ curiosity and sense of discovery. 

With a maximum teacher:student ratio of 1:6, each of our online courses is the perfect opportunity to engage kids and grow their coding confidence! Once set-up within our virtual learning environment, every member of the class can share their screen and other materials with the teacher, creating a collaborative atmosphere and ensuring every student can receive immediate feedback on their work.

Your child will learn:

  • Coding using Google’s Blockly language
  • Core coding concepts such as loops, variables, conditional logic, and functions
  • Game development and design techniques through the implementation of various mini-games
  • Team-working skills through the collaborative testing of multiplayer mods
  • How web servers, IP addresses and the internet works.

Typical Class Structure

10:00-10:15Set Up
Students will set up their coding environments, share any work from the previous day or projects they have done independently

1h 45 minutes of focused coding, led by our fantastic teachers. Students will face new challenges, solidify their knowledge of coding concepts and flex their creativity!

Please note, any students arriving 10 minutes into this section of the lesson will not be admitted into the class. Please read our lateness policy for more details.

12:00-12:15Wrap Up
Students will complete quizzes & challenges to test their knowledge and share their work. 

Lateness Policy

Customer feedback has focused on how students joining late can be majorly disruptive. 

Therefore we have imposed a cut-off time for joining lessons. If you are 15 minutes late to a lesson you will not be admitted into the class. We will ensure late students can catch up by using the recordings of the lesson and additional class resources!

Recordings of Lessons

Lessons will be recorded and uploaded onto the class padlet as a resource for students who have missed a lesson or arrived late.

Recordings of classes will only be available to class students, the class teacher, and the blue{shift} team. Recordings will be deleted 7 days after a course ends.
