Course information

Designed for our youngest students, our new Mini Coders: Ready, Set, Code! course takes our highly successful approach to teaching code to small children and adds new concepts, projects, and skills. With original short accessible activities that require little previous technological experience, this course allows small children to develop theircomputer literacy and coding skills in a supportive & fun environment!

Taking a project based approach to learning, children are encouraged to modify their apps and freely express their creativity. Our Mini Coders start their journey by becoming familiar with coding logic and reasoning using tablets or iPads. Throughout the course your child will develop their programming skills using Scratch Jr, an introductory programming language that enables young children to create their own stories, animations and games. This course will teach basic ICT skills and introductory computing concepts that are an important first step for children in both coding and future life!

We recommend that students who have not coded before take our Mini Coders: Introduction course.

Using video conferencing software, our virtual classroom provides students with an innovative approach to coding that balances learning computational skills with nurturing students’ curiosity and sense of discovery.

With a maximum teacher:student ratio of 1:6, each of our online courses is the perfect opportunity to engage kids and grow their coding confidence! Once set-up within our virtual learning environment, every member of the class can share their screen and other materials with the teacher, creating a collaborative atmosphere and ensuring every student can receive immediate feedback on their work.

Your child will:

  • Increase their knowledge of Scratch Jr.
  • Develop their ability to read and understand code
  • Learn the fundamentals of coding, such as loops & events
  • Create and program their own interactive stories & animations
  • Explore a variety of aspects of tech, including game design

Class Structure and Lateness Policy

Typical Class Structure

10:00-10:15Set Up
Students will set up their coding environments, share any work from the previous day or projects they have done independently

45 minutes of focused coding, led by our fantastic teachers. Students will face new challenges, solidify their knowledge of coding concepts and flex their creativity!

Please note, any students arriving 10 minutes into this section of the lesson will not be admitted into the class. Please read our lateness policy for more details.

11:00-11:15Wrap Up
Students will complete quizzes & challenges to test their knowledge and share their work.

Lateness Policy

Customer feedback has focused on how students joining late can be majorly disruptive.

Therefore we have imposed a cut-off time for joining lessons. If you are 15 minutes late to a lesson you will not be admitted into the class. We will ensure late students can catch up by using the recordings of the lesson and additional class resources!

Recordings of Lessons

Lessons will be recorded and uploaded onto the class padlet as a resource for students who have missed a lesson or arrived late.

Recordings of classes will only be available to class students, the class teacher, and the blue{shift} team. Recordings will be deleted 7 days after a course ends.

  • Can I book individual days?
  • Do I have to have both a tablet and a laptop/PC?
  • Is adult presence required?
  • I don’t want the teacher and the other children in the class to see my house, can I make the session more private?
  • “My daughter had a great time. Her teacher challenged and inspired her interest in coding and helped her produce lots of cool programmes each day.”
