Want to book a single day at camp? Due to restricted space, camp places are initially reserved for full-week students. We may have some last minute openings for single-day bookings - join our waiting list to be notified if they become available.

Students will work with LEGO Mindstorms to explore the key building blocks for robotics, as well as acquire essential science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) knowledge. They will build and program their very own robots and develop critical thinking, problem-solving and basic engineering skills by modifying and troubleshooting their code. Once finished, we will be challenging each student to integrate programming and sensor technology to make their robots move, react and solve fun challenges, including our very own version of Robot Wars! The course will also incorporate block-based coding with Scratch. Students will be guided through a series of challenges and tutorials to create their own impressive games from start to finish. They will then be shown how to combine digital with physical programming by creating a controller that can be used to control their Scratch creations!

Learning outcomes

Throughout this course students will learn basic engineering skills and principles: transferable life skills for the future. They will be programming robots with LEGO Mindstorm kits to understand how gears, motors, sensors and other components work. Students will learn and improve their design skills, as well as their teamwork and creative problem-solving skills through working with others. By the end of the course they will be able to understand and use the fundamental concepts of making a multiplayer game to work independently on their own projects.

Information for parents

This course uses block-based coding, therefore experience with Scratch or other block-based languages would be beneficial but is not required.

Camp structure

This is a sample schedule for a typical day at camp. In between each lesson there will be a 15-minute snack break, or a 1-hour lunch and play break.
10.00 - 11.00
Lesson 1
First off we'll get to know our teacher and classmates through some great mini games. Once we're all friends, we'll be introduced to our activity for the day. Let's jump in to coding!
11.15 - 12.30
Lesson 2
Now that we've had a healthy snack, we're ready to get right back into our activity. We'll carry on flexing our creative muscles by designing, coding and building our project.
13.30 - 14.45
Lesson 3
Let's refocus after lunch and playtime by diving into building our robots!
15.00 - 16.00
Lesson 4
It's time to finish off our project for the day and show it off to the rest of the class. Time has flown by - lets tidy up our work stations, pack up our things and get ready to go home!
I liked playing with my robot during robot wars!
