Course Information

Want to teach your child how to code but not sure where to start? You've come to the right place!

Designed from the ground-up for young children, our Scratch for Beginners: Introduction course is the ideal way to give your child brand new coding and computer skills.

Using our award-winning curriculum, one of our experienced teachers leads the class through a series of tutorials looking at key parts of computing, block-based coding, and the Scratch coding language! Each student will then write their own unique code to create animations, games, and more. Plus, once they've finished you can show off these awesome projects to your friends and family.

During the course we will cover a number of foundational topics as well as looking at coding best practices and positive computing habits, such as touch typing. Focusing on creativity and practical applications for code is a key part of the course - kids will come away having learnt something new, having created something unique, and having had fun!

Course Structure

  • Lesson One: The teacher and the class introduce each other. Once acquainted, the class will start learning all about how they can use Scratch! Students will learn about the fundamentals of animation, looking at how they can move characters and objects around the screen to create stories.
  • Lesson Two: Now being well into the course, students begin to explore key features for any programmer - in this lesson they will investigate loops and look at the various way they can implement these in their own creations.
  • Lesson Three: Students continue to learn vital computing concepts; moving onto conditionals, students will create an interactive 'robot' project that can be instructed to make it's own decisions.
  • Lesson Four: On the final day of the course, the class will tackle a number of exciting challenges and puzzles designed to put the skills from the last four days into practice!

This course aims to cover easier coding concepts and logic than our other courses, and serves as the perfect introduction to coding and computer science. Students will leave the club with key programming knowledge that they can use to progress onto more in-depth Scratch courses and projects.

We ask that - for at least the first session - an adult is available to help your child with their coding for the entirety of the lesson. In the following lessons an adult should be available at the start to help with any troubleshooting. You are also welcome to accompany your child for the remaining lessons too - we love parents and children learning together!

Using video conferencing software, our virtual classroom provides students with an innovative approach to coding that balances learning computational skills with nurturing students’ curiosity and sense of discovery.

With a maximum teacher:student ratio of 1:6, each of our online courses are the perfect opportunity to engage kids and grow their coding confidence. And once set-up within our virtual learning environment, every member of the class can share their screen and other materials with the teacher, creating a collaborative atmosphere and ensuring every student can receive immediate feedback on their work.

Your child will learn:

  • About the fundamental building blocks of game engines; they will be able to create gravity, movement, and more!
  • How to design systems able to detect collisions and track scores and other data.
  • A number of advanced computational concepts and thinking such as functions, data structures, and parameters.
  • Key skills needed for progression to text-based programming.
  • Important logical reasoning and problem solving skills.
  • How to independently code and create their own advanced projects and games.

Class Structure and Policies

Course Structure

16:30-16:45Set Up
Students will set up their coding environments, share any work from the previous classor projects they have done independently

16:45-17:30Coding
45 minutes of focused coding, led by our fantastic teachers. Students will face new challenges, solidify their knowledge of coding concepts and flex their creativity!

Please note, any students arriving 10 minutes into this section of the lesson will not be admitted into the class. Please read our lateness policy for more details.

17:30-17:45Wrap Up
Students will complete quizzes & challenges to test their knowledge and share their work.

Lateness Policy

Customer feedback has focused on how students joining late can be majorly disruptive.

Therefore we have imposed a cut-off time for joining lessons. If you are 15 minutes late to a lesson you will not be admitted into the class. We will ensure late students can catch up by using the recordings of the lesson and additional class resources!

Recordings of Lessons

Lessons will be recorded and uploaded onto the class padlet as a resource for students who have missed a lesson or arrived late.

Recordings of classes will only be available to class students, the class teacher, and the blue{shift} team. Recordings will be deleted 7 days after a course ends.
