Feel The Vibe: What Next For Coding In A Changing World?
If you are thinking of sending your children to summer coding camps, you may wonder how they might use the skills they gain, not least in a world where so much in the area of tech is changing.
This is particularly true of the realm of artificial intelligence (AI), which some have predicted will take over the task of coding from humans altogether. Others argue this is not the case, but that it will change the nature of how the task is undertaken.
Among the ideas is the emergence of what has been dubbed ‘Vibe’ coding. Invented by Andrej Karpathy, a former Tesla employee and co-founder of OpenAI, it uses AI by explaining in simple terms what you want the code to do, at which point the AI will write it for you.
According to Geeks for Geeks, this is “becoming popular with younger developers, hackathon participants and creative coders who want to engage in projects that require more than just logical thinking.” It adds that it aims to “create a space where coding becomes more fun and engaging”.
Far from making coders redundant, this description makes Vibe coding sound like it will make the lives of coders better, more productive and interesting.
Indeed, one might note that years ago, people thought computers would take our jobs away, yet instead they have created so many new possibilities, including coding. Vibe may just take this a step further.
Vibe coding is proving popular at the company board level too, with more enterprises adopting it. Among the latest is tech firm Wix, which has just acquired Base44, a Vibe coding platform, for US$80 million (£59 million).
These developments do not necessarily tell us what coding will be like even five years from now, let alone ten or 20. Predicting the future is never easy, as anyone who watched Back to the Future and eagerly expected flying cars to be the norm by 2015 will know.
However, by learning the basics of coding now, your kids could gain the skills they need to be able to adjust to a fast-changing world, whatever direction Vibe, or any other AI application, takes us.
