Is Learning All About Vibe Coding The Way Forward?

·

The benefits of having coding camps for kids have been abundantly clear in recent years as the emphasis on being tech-savvy has grown continually. Indeed, many who are now parents will reflect that theirs was the last generation born before innovations like the internet and smartphones that everyone now takes for granted.

Getting kids started early with the greater skills that coding can provide may give them a head start in a tech-filled world, but none of this stays still, which means new forms of coding are also emerging, especially in an age of AI.

Among these is the phenomenon of vibe coding. This uses AI to turn a request from a user to develop a programme idea into code. PC Mag has described it as creating a situation where “almost anyone can be a programmer”.

Does this make the skills kids may learn in coding camps obsolete? PC Mag’s article would suggest not, as it observed that the tools are a long way short of ideal and need to be checked.

Industry opinions on vibe coding vary. As the Economic Times site CIO.com notes, global technology research firm Gartner has predicted 40 per cent of enterprise software will be using the technology by 2028. However, it also sounded a cautionary note, arguing that the positives of rapid innovation have to be balanced with quality concerns.

However, Tech Radar has taken a more positive view. It has set out to attack three common notions about vibe coding, including the idea that AI code will be unreliable. It also refuted the claim that vibe coding is a “shortcut” and, perhaps most importantly for the importance of training youngsters to code, insisted that it won’t make developers obsolete.

It may be that Vibe coding finds a clear niche and is a success, or it could be replaced at some point by something better. Nobody can be quite sure in a fast-moving world. But by getting your kids to coding camps, you can give them the basic skills on which they can build, so that one day they may be the ones at the forefront of the latest coding innovations.
