In this camp, students will have the opportunity to design, build, and program their own robots. Using robotics equipment, children will learn the principles of mechanical design, electronics, and sensor integration. They will apply their JavaScript programming skills to control their robots, creating intelligent machines that respond to their commands and navigate their surroundings. Through project-based learning, they will gain valuable insights into the relationship between problem solving and coding, developing a deep understanding of how technology can be harnessed to create innovative solutions for the future.

Learning outcomes

Using JavaScript: Teach students the basics of the JavaScript programming language and how to use it to control and program robots, create web apps, and .

Understanding of robotics components: Introduce students to robotics components such as sensors, actuators, and controllers, and explain how they can be programmed using JavaScript to control the movement and behaviour of a robot.

Hands-on experience with robotic design: Provide opportunities for students to work in teams to build and program their own robots using JavaScript with BBC Micro:Bit, Wonder Workshop Cue, and LEGO Mindstorms.

Creative problem-solving: Encourage students to use their creativity and problem-solving skills to design and develop their own robots and algorithms, program them using JavaScript, and to come up with innovative ways to solve real-world problems using robotics and programming.

Information for parents

This course will use robotics kits primarily programmed using JavaScript with web-based software on laptops. Bringing a laptop is recommended if possible as students learn more effectively with a device that they are familiar with.

Camp structure

This is a sample schedule for a typical day at camp. In between each lesson there will be a 15-minute snack break, or a 1-hour lunch and play break.
10.00 - 11.00
Lesson 1
First off we'll get to know our teacher and classmates through some great mini games. Once we're all friends, we'll be introduced to our activity for the day. Let's jump in to coding!
11.15 - 12.30
Lesson 2
Now that we've had a healthy snack, we're ready to get right back into our activity. We'll carry on flexing our creative muscles by designing, coding and building our project.
12.30 - 13.30
Lunchtime
After half an hour for lunch it's time for some offline, outdoor time. Students take part in activities ranging from inflatable obstacle course races to football tournaments, scavenger hunts to water games (fingers crossed for some sunny weather!).
13.30 - 14.45
Lesson 3
Let's refocus after lunch and playtime by diving into building our robots!
15.00 - 16.00
Lesson 4
It's time to finish off our project for the day and show it off to the rest of the class. Time has flown by - let's tidy up our work stations, pack up our things and get ready to go home!

I liked learning how to code and meeting new friends!
