Learning outcomes

This course aims to engage kids through creative coding projects in the popular online game, and give them a thorough grounding in computational principles.

They will code using Microsoft’s Blockly language, applying coding skills to Minecraft to learn how to use loops, functions, variables, and conditionals, amongst other things. We’ll introduce them to text-based coding through Python and will give them an understanding of the behind the scenes of the Minecraft universe.

Their team-working skills will grow through the collaborative testing of multiplayer mods and their understanding of how the internet, IP addresses and web servers will improve. Finally, students will work on projects that utilise both off-screen activities and programmes outside of Minecraft to develop their imagination and practical skills, which can then be applied to their in-game servers!

Camp structure

This is a sample schedule for a typical day at camp. In between each lesson there will be a 15-minute snack break, or a 1-hour lunch and play break.
10.00 - 11.00
Lesson 1
First off we'll get to know our teacher and classmates through some great mini games. Once we're all friends, we'll be introduced to our activity for the day. Let's jump in to coding!
11.15 - 12.30
Lesson 2
Now that we've had a healthy snack, we're ready to get right back into our activity. We'll carry on flexing our creative muscles by designing, coding and building our project.
12.30 - 13.30
Lunchtime
After half an hour for lunch it's time for some offline, outdoor time. Students take part in activities ranging from inflatable obstacle course races to football tournaments, scavenger hunts to water games (fingers crossed for some sunny weather!).
13.30 - 14.45
Lesson 3
Let's refocus after lunch and playtime by diving into building our robots!
15.00 - 16.00
Lesson 4
It's time to finish off our project for the day and show it off to the rest of the class. Time has flown by - let's tidy up our work stations, pack up our things and get ready to go home!

My favourite part was building bridges with code!
